Activities | Conferences

The Society holds an Annual Conference, which is typically combined with its Annual General Meeting. The aim of the LepSoc Africa Conference is twofold: firstly, it showcases recent developments, scientific papers or events, relevant to Afrotropical Lepidoptera. Secondly, it presents an opportunity for members of LepSoc Africa (including overseas members and visiting lepidopterists) to meet socially and share ideas and experiences.

At the 2016 event it was agreed that Conferences would be held in future during the peak local butterfly-season, to encourage the participation of overseas delegates, giving them the option of extending their stay to include field expeditions.

A summary of Annual Conferences held over the previous 6 years is as follows:

·         2016 & 2017 Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort, Gauteng

·         2015 Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, Brummeria, Gauteng

·         2014 Blue Moonlight Lodge, Cullinan, Gauteng

·         2013 Hermannsburg School, Greytown, KwaZulu Natal

·         2012 Onderstepoort Research Centre, Pretoria, Gauteng

This year’s Conference will be held at the Nestle Centre, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort, Gauteng over the weekend of 21–22 October 2017, as detailed below:

Notification of Conference and call for Papers

Dear LepSoc Africa member, This year’s LepSoc Conference and AGM will, once again, be held in Gauteng. As agreed at the 2016 AGM, the event is being held during the height of the butterfly season, to enable visiting Lepidopterists to attend the Conference and to partake in local field trips or excursions.

The venue is the Nestlé Centre, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Malcolm Rd, Poortview, Roodepoort, 1724.

Dates: Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October 2017.

All papers should be related to aspects of African Lepidoptera, although papers dealing with other subject matter will be considered, by exception. We are confident that this year’s presentations will be of the usual high standard, covering everything from illustrated talks about expeditions, to research papers.

If, as we hope, you are planning to present a paper at the Conference, please draft an Abstract and email it to:

Deadline for Abstracts is 31 August 2017, and for Papers 30 September 2017.

Thank you,

Jeremy Dobson Chairman: The Lepidopterists’ Society of Africa
